Confessions of an Addict (9): The Year End Edition

Well, it's not like this is news, isn't it? I've been a certifiable addict long before I've been blogging. I thought about doing my Confessions year end post by giving you a total tally of my purchases for the year but I realized, I DON'T REALLY WANT TO KNOW. The fact is, I'm scared to know. So I decided to the next best thing - or worst thing.  I logged into my Amazon account and figured out the number of books I've purchased for the year. I know, I know. This is hardly an accurate measure of my book buying binges. I visit my local bookstore once every Saturday and I've placed orders everywhere else. I even sought out an Australian on line book shop because of my love for Australian authors. And I've recently discovered BooksofWonder.com where I've just purchased a whole slew of autographed books. Gah.

So according to Amazon.com and Amazon.ca I've placed 80 orders in 2011. That's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. But then I got to thinking, for each order placed for the year, was that just one or two books? Well, it isn't. I've amassed a staggering 602 books this year on purchases through Amazon alone. That is a 7.52 per order on average. This does not include my Kindle purchases! Good Lord. No wonder I'm so broke. This is like, Carrie Bradshaw's sudden realization that her shoe purchases was the primary reason she was on the brink of homelessness. While I'm far from being homeless (fingers crossed), I could not even fathom the dollar value of my purchases for the year. The husband follows this blog but I doubt he reads my posts. I sincerely hope not. Besides, it's not like I can hide my hoarding from him anyway. You won't be able to walk into a room in the house without tripping over books.

The picture on the right is my to-be-read bookshelf. It's stacks deep, I know. At this rate, my life would soon be over run by books (as if it isn't yet). When did this madness ever begin, anyway? Damn Stephenie Meyer and her sparkly vampires! I blame her for this addiction to the YA genre. It was because of her books that I couldn't get enough. OVERWHELMING seem like a word which could hardly describe the state of what started out to be a hobby. Now, I just can't stop my panic buying. I have this sense of trepidation when I don't get any books in the mail. And it's gotten to a point where even my family has a schedule working around me. Our first agenda for Saturday is to hit Indigo ( a Canadian bookstore chain). Sometimes, it's sad that they don't even bother asking me anymore if I wanted to do something because they know the answer will always be, 'It depends. Are we going to the bookstore?'

The thing is, it's not like I've told my husband that he shouldn't say NO to me. Or that he shouldn't protest. I told him that he's got free reign to tell me when enough is enough. But he said he'd rather I buy books than waste my money on purses, which I also have a severe addiction to. His response, though soothing at the time, could hardly placate my unease when I see my bursting bookshelves. I'm not complaining. The guy is a saint and I'm lucky that he hasn't divorced me yet. I just don't want to be that person. You know, the one that gets so lost in their personal vices they don't even notice life passing them by. Whoa. That's deep, man.

Anyway, there is a point to these inane ramblings. Throughout the year, I've collected books that I didn't even realize I have dupli-copies of. At the time of this writing, I have counted 21. TWENTY freaking ONE books that I either, pre-ordered then bought at the store, or because I'm such a spastic loon that I didn't even realized I have those books already. So...who wants them? Okay, okay. Calm down. I know you want them. Without further ado, ladies and gents, I present to you...dramatic drum roll...

  5. WOW, so many books!! *she said enviously*
I haven't bought as many as you have this year (far from it) but around 160 books. And I'm 16 and unemployed so that's a lot for me. x)

Thanks for the great giveaway!! :D

Oh, and I originally followed you via Bloglovin but now I'm following you via GFC! :)

  6. HAHAHAHA omg, that is beyond many. And I thought my TBR pile was high enough. I haven't really bought a lot of books this year. Mainly ebooks cause I'm still a student and hence, rely on my mom for allowances. Haha, so as for physical copies, hmm.. Around 15?

Thanks for the giveaway and happy holidays! And yes, I think you are being buried by your books.XD

  7. What a great giveaway! As far as your question about how many books I've bought this year...I'm gonna have to go with a ridonkulous amount. My to-read shelf is starting to look like yours, never mind the ebooks! Just at my library book sale I bought about 25 books. Thanks again for the chance!

  8. So envious for you! And great giveaway. Like you, I'm a compulsive book buyer but as a bookseller I always get discounts. Yay! So no problem with the prices. I counted almost 45 books for this year alone and before this year really ends, I'll add more books on my to-read shelf *greedy look*

    Happy Holidays!

  9. Oy, I definitely feel your pain - I just got another shipment from Chapters just in time for the holidays.... and my stack is seriously set to topple with "to reads"

Thanks for the giveaway! Have fun on your holiday! (fingers crossed the airlines will be nice to you this time round!)

  10. WOW!! I thought you were going to do a bunch of winners! I would not know what to do with myself if I won all of them!!! You seriously rock(not that you didn't already know that)!! Thank you for more awesomeness!

  11. Oh - and I seriously must have bought 30+ - but mind you I was finishing my Master's degree. lol. This year may be different!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh sorry missed the question... I have probably bought about 50 books this year and mostly because I attend a book sale where hard covers are only $4 and PB are $2!

  13. I have bought 1 book this year and it is Clockwork Prince! I'm broke to splurge on books!

    ReplyDelete
  14. can you have 3 winners instead? looooool me wants the TMI series!!! I bought 3 books thats around $40+ amazon shipping lmao

  15. I'm not sure how much I bought this year but not as much as you! I'm trying to cut back and borrow many from the library but still when I see a good deal or want a keepr I can't resist ... :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. Just counted about 30 books and ebooks which I bought since I started my blog in May, but I also exchanged some, borrowed a lot from the library, downloaded as freebies and got as ARCs/galleys, so there was no need to buy them. Can't count the rest, because I only opened my account on Goodreads when I started blogging so the rest of the titles just piled up with no order ;)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Love the Carrie Bradshaw reference! I'm such a SatC addict. LOL.
And don't feel bad about buying so many books, although I can understand it. I haven't even bought nearly as many books as you did (I'm a poor student who can only work on Saturdays), but for me I did buy MANY (= about 90) books this year and sometimes I'm feeling bad about it, too. But in the end, I think it's no problem as long as you can afford buying many books without neglecting anything else and you're happy about it. :)

Thank you so much for the giveaway! That's an awesome tower of books. <3

  50. Thanks for the giveaway. I'm a proud supporter of my public library. So, while I've read 300+ books in 2011, I've probably bought less than 20 (basically the ones I really, really want to read that the library system doesn't have).

  57. I absolutely love books & would love to win this giveaway. I buy @ Amazon B&N library sales yard sales. I have regularly go to the library & have since I was a child & spent hours there. My favorite place to buy books are old bookstores looking for all kinds of books but especially old cookbooks which I collect. They're everywhere but I love them, I read those just like the others. I read old, new, fiction, non-fiction, mysteries. Depends on my mood, level of concentration, what catches my eye or imagination, maybe the phases of the moon. I've been luck enough to have 3 of my 4 adult children also turn out to be compulsive readers too. So if I'm lucky enough to win ill dare. Thanks for the chance.

  65. I don't think I've bought any books this year. I know, I know. How have I been resisting buying books when there are SO many fantastic ones? Truth is, I've been greatly blessed by books arriving in my mailbox, I can't even finish the ones I've received this year! The pile of books TBR (still in their envelopes) is getting higher and higher beside by bed. Also, I hardly ever visit the bookstore here. They have most of their books in plastic wrappers, so I can't flip through them to see if they're worth the buy or not.

I entered in the form as Evangeline.

As to how many books I've bought this year: I probably buy in average 3/4 a month, so that is at least 80. And that's not counting any e-books (I got my Kindle last month and I've been having a bit too much fun).

So I'd love a chance at these. Thanks!

  98. I think I bought more than a hundred of books this year, which includes ebooks and printed books as well as those books I bought for giveaways and for gifts.

    ReplyDelete
  99. i love the giveaway, and i don't i bought enough books this year :) lol

    ReplyDelete
  100. I don't know how many..but I'm guessing around 20ish. (I actually counted what I can from my seat but since my shelf is double-stacked in some places, I cant really be sure)

And I just have to say this: I <3 the tower!

    ReplyDelete
  101. Good Lordy, your TBR shelf! So many many books! Will you please adopt me? I'll promise to be good just so I can read some of those. :) Anyway thank you for this generous giveaway!

  102. I have a huge TBR list, but I haven't bought many books this year. I'm more of a library girl. :)

    ReplyDelete
  103. This year I got at least a hundred books, though I haven't read them all ;_;

    ReplyDelete
  104. I'm not really sure! I bought up the series of sookie books, then hit a couple of book stories going out of business (made a haul), then lots of great deals on my nook!!!

    ReplyDelete
  105. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SPARKLY, JOY!

Oh my goodness. I can't even imagine...

I have bought, hmm (wait, I'm counting) 18. I think I may be missing a few but that's basically it :)

Thanks so much for the giveaway! I am crossing my fingers that your house doesn't overflow from the book mountains (just kidding!).

  106. I have won more books than I have bought. Probably I have bought 40 books--including books I have bought for my daughter. Maybe even 50. Just not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oh my God! The number of books you're going to give away is...a lot. I mean, that's an amazing number of books!
Um, I think I may have bought around 20. Although I wish I can buy more. But I'm just a poor student and life is hard. I get by by borrowing books from friends and from the school library.
I really wish I can win those awesome books that you have for the giveaway.

Massive thanks for doing this! :)

  108. This year has been a tight one money-wise... so I haven't bought that many. I've been utilizing the many libraries around here and borrowing from friends. But wow! You have quite the personal library!! I bow to your spectacular bookshelf awesomeness. :)

Thanks so much for the amazing giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  109. I have no idea, but I know its a pretty high number, which is why I didn't buy any books in December.
Not sure if it worked, because now I want to buy all those books I wanted in Dec + the ones in January, all in ane month ...

    ReplyDelete
  110. I think borrowed more book from the library than brought them.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thanks for the giveaway :) I've been good this year (and b/c I need to use my parents' money lol) and only bought 3 or 4 :) Fortunately there is the library and book giveaways lol

    ReplyDelete
  112. OMG! I wish I had as many as you do! I think I've only bough around 50 or 60 books this year, so I'm a saint in this department.
I'm lucky that I'm working on my own novel and I barely have time for reading while I'm doing so.
Anyways thank you for this giveaway. Most of those books are on my to-read list. Happy New Year!

    ReplyDelete
  113. I also have a habit of buying books waaaayyyy over my budget and just this month I bought 8 books when my budget is only limited to 3 ;)

    ReplyDelete
  114. WOW. Those are all the books I have staaaarved over the year for.
Honestly, I haven't bought many books... probably like 2. But I have taken over my public library.
Thanks again for this AMAZING giveaway! Keeping my fingers crossed! :)

  121. I shudder to think how many books I have bought this year...I won't tally in case my husband were to see! I would love to win this stack! I am shamed to say I have not read any Cassandra Clare so winning this would work quite nicely. I also can't find my copy of "Matched"? Could this be fate? =)

    Thanks for the fab giveaway!

    That's not very nice. ;-)
I think I can honestly say, I bought 1 book last year. (not counting a few for Tiny)
    I only bought Divergent.
Maybe this year, when I'm back to work, I can get a few more.

  125. Joy Joy Joy....what will it take for you to let me have Mr. Joy for awhile. I've got some things I need. A trip to Hawaii, more books, a kindle fire, pretty purses just to name a few. Anyway, I have bought between 3-5 books this year. That's sad Joy. You should really feel bad for me. Oh and Jo should be disqualified because she's bought me AT LEAST 10 books as presents (ie The Ice People and Ice Princess) so she lied. And Weegie should be disqualified on the grounds that she's Weegie!

Love ya babe! Hope the New Year is great to you!

P.S. you still owe me a trip to Sweden. Weans by that I mean you come along to keep me sane on the plane not that you have to buy my ticket. I'll buy you a book!

    ReplyDelete
  126. LMAO! oh Erica. If you'd stop feeding your goats, then maybe you'd have more money for books? Lol. I love you lots! <3!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Omg Joy! I am envious of your bookshelf. I follow you on goodreads (my real name is Shannon) and know you are a reading machine, but I never imagined you read that much! I have not bought many books this year. I'm slowly rebuilding my collection after the fire I had last January. I think in total I've bought about 20 books. I'm a book fiend myself and love to read. I just don't have the funds to fuel my addiction. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  128. What an awesome bookshelf. I am embarrassed to say how many books I have bought this year. I do know I am trying read more of what I have before buying more LOL but I see some real dandy books in this stack that I really, really want :) Thank you for the fun giveaway opportunity.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Thank you for the giveaway! I can not even begin to know how many books I have bought this year. For my own sanity I do not keep track!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Honestly, being a new book blog and all I haven't bought that many books.... most I just borrow from the library and read them... If I really like them then I buy them. I think that is going to change this year though seeing as there are tons of books coming out that I can't wait to read!

    ReplyDelete
  131. Oh gosh I want to read so many of these- amazing! YAY YAY YAY!
I think I bought about three books in 2011- The Corfu Trilogy- containing my all time favourite book My Family and Other Animals, The Search for WondLa, the Swiss family Robinson (what a waste was all I could say for that one) and I think that's it- I became a reviewer so got heaps of books I'm dying for by that, which is terrific!
And this year I've already bought two and won two- won Divergent and A Long Long sleep and bought Matched (I'd give this copy away on my blog! I love it so much!) and Bridge to Teribithia.

    ReplyDelete
  132. Oh wow, what an awesome giveaway! And thank you so so so much for making this international! No seriously, hardly any giveaways of this massive size are international so ahh, thank you thank you thank you! :)

    ReplyDelete
  137. I am ashamed to say that I purchased at least 100 books that I know of this year. I got a Nook and I couldn't stop downloading.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Wow! That is an insane amount of books! :) I've bought probably at least 40 physical books and over 50 ebooks. :)

    ReplyDelete
  139. Oh my goodness! You have tOns of books! And I don't know how many books I've got this year... I'm afraid to know! My hubby would be as shocked as me perhaps if he realized how much I spent on books (and knowing that I spent his money!)LOL!

I think I bought about 50 books in 2011, not counting books I bought for other people. Not a huge amount, but I still consider that to be a lot! :P

    ReplyDelete
  142. Wow I'm so jealous of your bookshelf right now! I think I must have brought around 30 or so books this year and I haven't read half of them I keep getting distracted by other books. And the fact that I brought a kindle doesn't help my book splurging I can't stop from the one click buying!

thanks so much for the giveaway! :)

    ReplyDelete
  143. Wow! Amazing giveaway. Wow, again! :)

  144. I only have a small collection of books, and most of them were given to me. But here is the list:

    Bought this year:
Iron fey series (1-4) by Julie Kagawa
The Covenant series (0.5-1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
    The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong
    Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

Given to me during Christmas season or as a birthday gift:
Archangel's Kiss and Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh
Fire and Graceling by Kristin Cashore
    Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
    Hex hall by Rachel Hawkins
    Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

    Total: 20 books.

I know you only said "bought" but I can't help but also thank the people who gave me books that I absolutely love during the holiday seasons! So I'm also giving the specific titles of all the books I've acquired for the year 2011! I know it's a short list, but I was able to read about 102 books. It's not much because I'm still a student, but I'm happy with the achievement!

Thanks for the AWESOME giveaway. 21 BOOKS. WOW.. and those are second copies. I want a bookshelf just like yours! Whoo!

Awhile ago I was searching for the part where you tell us if it's only for US or international, and when I saw on your comment that it was international, I was SOOO excited! 21 books for all the viewers! If that's not called awesome, I don't know what it's called!

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  145. I have only bought like 10-20 books. But i won over 50. So i have definitely ran out of space to put them. But i love books. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Thank you so much for making this International - you are a legend! I only have 2 of the books on the pile already and most of them are ones I really want. :D

I only bought 14 books from Amazon last year, but I know I bought a lot more in my local discount bookstore, think it would be around 50-60 books. I know my shelves are full, not as full as yours though. Your shelves are amazing! I would love that.

    Thanks again. :D

    ReplyDelete
  147. Thanks for this amazing giveaway! I've only read Matched, but in ebook, so it'd be fantastic to win your tower:D I bought lots of ebooks last year for my hungry little Kindle. But real books, maybe 5, or so.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I have bought about 100 this year! I am a teensy bit obsessed lol
I am just starting my collection, so that's my excuse for buying so many...I will have to come up with a new one soon ;)
This is the most AMAZING giveaway ever...thank you for being so generous!!

  149. hahaha I laughed so hard when i read this post. I unfortunately don't have the funds to buy books , or even one book every week. But I DO have a book obsession lol And have also bought a few books before without even realizing I already had them at home! Ahhh! It was a definate AHA moment! lol

    ReplyDelete
  150. WOW! What a great tower of books!!!!! I've probably bought about 20 this year. I don't have a lot of extra cash, so usually I end up going to the library. Winning this stack would be amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Oh wow, that's more books than I probably own right now! I get most of my books from the library if possible since I don't have a lot of extra spending cash. I probably bought about 20 books last year total and that's mostly with gift cards I was given. I'm incredibly impressed by your collection!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I've bought too many books (mostly e-books) to count on one hand! :)

    ReplyDelete
  153. Thanks for the amazing giveaway, I bought quite a few books this past year, around 30 or so. And already so far this year I've bought 7. Reading is a good obsession to have.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Joy, you've got problems. LMAO. I just moved and I'm trying to get my bookshelves set up and I thought my tbr shelf was bad. Hahahahaha, no. I'm curious to know if your ebook stash is this bad. Because my ebook stack is pretty awful. Damn Kindle. I'm not entering the giveaway because I've read most of these, but I just wanted to stop in and say hi. And yeah, that shelf is pretty impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  155. Last year I bought 20 or so and received many as gifts. This year I haven't bought any yet XD

    ReplyDelete
  156. This is a fabulous giveaway. I would say that I bought about 100 books this last year. It has gotten so bad that my husband says I can't buy anymore until I cleaned out the pile in our bedroom.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Last year, I won a lot of books (about 30 or so) but I still bought some. I'd say about 10 at the very most. And this year, I've bought two or three. :) Great giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  158. Thanks for this ahhhh-mazing giveaway!!! :))
Um, I don't know how many books I bought in 2011 and frankly, I don't want to know because the amount of money I spent would probably give me chest pains. lol :P

    ReplyDelete
  159. Well for 2011 I probably bought about 75 books. Mainly because I lost all my books May 22 when I lost my home in the tornado that hit my hometown. I will never be able to replace them all, but I had to start somewhere.

  161. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful giveaway! I wish good luck to all the participants! For me, I bought 68 books in 2011. I counted them because I just finished cleaning my room!

    ReplyDelete
  162. I probably bought a total of 40 books this year. Is that too much? I know it is nothing compared to your's, but when it comes to books... reading is expanding the mind, so I rationalize it as a good habit not as an OCD.

THANKS for sharing with us the chance to own your Leaning Tower of Books. I would love to have them on my shelf, and they wouldn't duplicate any of mine!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Heavens no!! But my daughter is building me a bookshelf to hold them all because she's tired of the many stacks of them all over our floor, so I would say way too many!!

    ReplyDelete
  164. I probably bought around 15 books last year. And now I'm broke lol

    @Tibiux

    ReplyDelete
  165. Oh My God, *salivates looking at all those books*
I probably bought around 20, only last year. :(

Thanks SO much for hosting this giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  166. Wow! You are one very lucky gal to have hubs that loves you so much! My hubs doesn't mind that I buy books, but he prefers the $1.99 ones that I can now get on my Nook - cheap and takes up no space, lol! I probably bought 8 books last year, but I've already bought 5 in the last 2 weeks, so I'm waaay ahead of the game ;)
Thanks for sharing with us! ~ margie

  168. I have no idea how many books I've bought last year Joy but no where near as many as you! I wish my husband were as understanding. All my books except a very small select few are relegated to the loft because he doesn't want them cluttering the place up! I had to buy a Kindle to stop the incessant moaning when a new book arrived in the mail. At least I can be sneaky about it now ;-)
I would love these books, even though hubs will go apeshit (again!) I don't care though lol!

    ReplyDelete
  169. Wow...I am first of all ...totally envious of that bookshelf!!! I'm pretty broke...I don't think I bought more than 40 books last year!! Everything else was gifted, won, or borrowed.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Nice tower! I've bought, for myself and others, roughly 43 books in 2011, and only 3 thus far in 2012. But the year is new, and more will follow.

    ReplyDelete
  171. I love this give away! In 2011, I got 100+ books on my kindle (not sure how many were free though) and I bought atleast 10 paper/hard backs. This year, I've bought 15 e-books so far and no paperbacks. Those .99 cent books on amazon are so hard to resist!

    ReplyDelete
  172. I have no idea how many books I've bought. I like to think it's not so bad though, because I buy lots from the thrift store so they're relatively cheap.

    ReplyDelete
  173. My jaw nearly dropped when I saw the post being tweeted around! What a wonderful idea to share your books. There is nothing like a good book and sometimes its hard not to get the ones I want when we r financially strapped at times.
thanks for the generous giveaway and good luck to all!!

  183. I'm pretty sure that I don't even have $602 in total to be able to purchase books...which makes me very jealous of your TBR bookshelf.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I only bought 25 from Amazon, but I bought two big stacks from Borders during the closing sales and a big stack from the Harvard Bookstore bargain basement when I went back to visit my alma mater.

    ReplyDelete
  185. Oh my God! Did I tell you I love you? ;)

I can't remember. May be 50 from Amazon Kindle store. :p

    ReplyDelete
  189. WOW!

This year, I've purchased 5 books, but they've all been on my e-reader, so they don't take up physical space.

    ReplyDelete
  190. 3 =/ I have no money to buy them anymore! I rely on giveaways and the library now...

    ReplyDelete
  191. Haven't bought any books yet, lots from the library.

    ReplyDelete
  192. Just discovered your blog. My hubby bought me a kindle so the books I buy won't take up any of the non-existent space in our small house. I don't know how many books I've purchased this year. Too many. I like amazon's free books. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  193. I have bought 6 Jan 2012 releases and have pre-ordered 4 Feb 2012 new releases. Thank you for the giveaway!

    ReplyDelete
  194. Since I got a bunch of amazon gift cards for Christmas and my birthday, I couldn't possibly try to remember how many books I've bought since the beginning of this year! I want to say that I've pre-ordered five and purchased 10 (but that's also including cheap Kindle ebooks). Thanks for the giveaway!
